Choosing Bridesmaid Jewellery
As Lady Danbury in the Netflix drama Bridgeton announced, “The wedding season is upon us!”
Perhaps you are a bride to be, wondering what sort of jewellery you would like your bridesmaids to wear on your special day or what to buy your bridesmaids a treasured gift to thank them for their support… or perhaps you have been asked to be a bridesmaid and you are not sure what sort of jewellery to wear. Here are a few tips to help:
Less is Sometimes More…
Carefully chosen stylish and elegant pieces of jewellery will compliment a bridesmaid’s dress and complete the overall look. However, don’t feel you need to choose all three elements of a necklace, bracelet and earrings as this can look OTT and detract from the silhouette of the dress. These pieces don’t have to be matching but instead, compliment each other.
The general rule is the larger the necklace, the smaller the earrings should be and visa versa – otherwise they can ‘fight’ with each other. Whilst mixing silver and gold pieces can look really edgy and current, in a bridal setting it can appear confusing and not hang well together.
Consider the Neckline…
This will dictate what sort of necklace will work best.
- If it is a strapless, it leaves the neck and decolletage area free to make a bold choice so perhaps opt for a larger statement piece: either a chunkier necklace that sits comfortably at the base of the neck, like our Fifi necklace or a drop necklace like our Binki Silver necklace. With this neckline, you also have room to consider layering a few necklaces for dramatic effect, for example a Tilly Silver Bobble necklace with a Silver T Bar Pendant necklace.
- With a V-neck, a pendant necklace works particularly well as a delicate chain will trace the collarbone and echo the shape of the neckline. Try our Coin Pearl necklace, our Circle of Life necklace or perhaps our Gold Clover necklace.
- Spaghetti straps are usually quite a dainty look so try not to overpower this neckline with a heavy necklace as it may look unbalanced. Instead, choose an elegant round necklace like our Samira Pearl and Gold Choker or a simple pendant that frames the face, like our Linked Silver Circle necklace.
- Halterneck dresses call for hair up and invite dramatic, show-stopping earrings. Here you can go to town with drop earrings that make a real statement but avoid necklaces as they can get tangled up in the neckline and just look messy. Check out our Merrill Silver and Blue Topaz earrings or our Lexi Gold Link earrings.
Choose statement earrings with a halter neck for a dramatic look. They work better than necklaces with this neckline.
The Art of Colour…
Let the colour of the dress guide you when choosing the perfect jewellery. If the bridesmaid dress is a bold hue, then choose more subtle jewellery with neutral tones and simple design; however if the material is a soft colour, you can be braver with statement pieces which incorporate coloured gemstones and perhaps even tie this in with the colours in the bouquets. Browse through our extensive Birthstone Jewellery collection to see the range of colours available.
The Elegance of Pearls…
Many brides like to give their bridesmaids pearls. It is a lovely tradition and the lustre of the pearls compliments the bridal dress beautifully but they don’t have to be a plain string of pearls. A Single Pearl necklace or a something that mixes pearls and stones can look stunning and more contemporary, like our Pearl Halo pendant.
Sparkle Throughout the Day…
Cubic zirconia is another popular choice for bridesmaid jewellery as it offers the sparkle of diamonds but with a very different price tag! It can really lift the complexion and add glamour to the occasion without breaking the bank. Our Circle of Life necklace is a winner!
Choosing bridesmaid jewellery should be a joyous experience yet so many people become anxious about getting it right. If you are the bride, try to give yourself plenty of time to think about what you might like your bridesmaids to wear; Pinterest is a good place to start to gather together ideas. Enjoy exploring different looks and options that suit your budget. Chat it through with the bride and bridesmaids so that you are all on the same page and agree about a style or a look. This is a good idea even if the bridesmaids are choosing their own jewellery. If you’re choosing jewellery as a present to your bridesmaids, think beyond your special day so that they continue to enjoy wearing what you have chosen for them. Happy shopping!
