Birthstone jewellery makes a personal and very thoughtful gift. It’s a lovely way to show that you’ve put real thought into choosing a present.
What is the origin of birthstone jewellery and what do the birthstones represent?
There are two groups of birthstones – the secondary ones being added to the primary group in the 1950s. This may have been to broaden the range of stones to include semiprecious gems as an alternative to precious stones. The wearing of birthstone jewellery is thought to date back to the 18th century in Poland. However, there is evidence that the concept of birthstones is many centuries older.
Sometimes people enjoy wearing specific stones because of a meaning which has been attributed to particular stones; for example garnet is said to symbolise friendship and compassion. We find many of our clients enjoy giving birthstone jewellery as a way to make a gift personal.
